Éco-Quartier NDG is organizing a costume exchange where old Halloween outfits will be given to kids whose families otherwise might not be able to afford one.

“Basically, it’s used Halloween costumes that children have outgrown… instead of sitting in the house collecting dust, they can bring them here and we’ll share them with a child in need,” said Nikki Schiebel, co-ordinator of Éco-Quartier NDG.

The motivations for the exchange are two-fold. Those who give costumes have a chance to make a kid happy with their donation, said Schiebel.

“Halloween is one of those events made for kids, and it’s fun to help them celebrate that,” she explained.

The program was also designed to help make Halloween a bit more eco-friendly.

“Here, we’re always thinking about overconsumption and waste… In 2008, looking at all the costumes sold in stores and the fact that children only wore them for one day - the consumptive patterns hit us,” Schiebel explained.

It’s the second year for the exchange, and Schiebel hopes more people will participate than last year, when turnout was low.

“We’re hoping to up the numbers drastically this year,” she said.

Schiebel also gave some tips for celebrating in a more sustainable manner, suggesting going through relatives’ closets to find costumes, buying them second-hand, or participating in a costume swap with friends.

Instead of plastic jack-o’-lantern buckets, have kids collect candy in a pillowcase, she said. People should give out candy they know kids will like, or give out something useful, like Halloween-themed pencils.

Finally, she added, make use of the insides of your jack-o’-lantern– after all, pumpkin is a food, too.

The costumes will be collected at the Éco-Quartier offices, located at 6575 Somerled,
suite 206, until Oct. 23. They will be distributed at the Walkley Community Centre the week before Halloween.
